From July 24th to 26th, 2024, the vibrant city of Arusha, Tanzania, became a hub of innovation and inspiration as young leaders gathered for the Food Systems Youth Leadership Training (FSYLT). Contracted to facilitate this transformative event, Shamba Box worked in collaboration with the Global Alliance for Improved Nutrition (GAIN) Tanzania to equip youth with the knowledge, skills, and networks needed to influence and transform food systems in their communities.

Day 1: Setting the Stage for Change
The training kicked off with an energizing opening session where participants were introduced to the core objectives of the program. The room buzzed with excitement as young leaders from diverse backgrounds shared their motivations for attending. Many were eager to gain a deeper understanding of food systems, develop policy analysis and advocacy skills, and connect with like-minded peers.

Throughout the day, sessions covered the foundational aspects of food systems. Participants explored questions like “Who influences the food system?” and “What are the key processes that shape it?” Through interactive discussions and group activities, they began mapping out the complex web of stakeholders and influences that define our food systems.

Day 2: Diving Deep into Advocacy and Policy
Day two focused on policy analysis and advocacy. Participants were introduced to the intricacies of food policy and learned how to analyze and influence it effectively. Engaging exercises helped them understand the power dynamics at play and how they, as youth leaders, can drive change.

One of the highlights was a public speaking workshop, an additional session designed to boost participants’ confidence and communication skills. It was inspiring to see young leaders step up to the podium, practice their speeches, and receive constructive feedback. By the end of the day, the room was filled with empowered voices ready to advocate for better food systems.

Day 3: Building Networks and Action Plans
The final day was all about collaboration and action planning. Participants delved into stakeholder mapping, identifying key allies and potential partners in their efforts to influence food systems. They also worked on developing personal action plans, outlining concrete steps they would take to apply their new knowledge and skills in their communities.

Networking was a significant part of the day, with ample opportunities for participants to connect and with facilitators. The relationships formed during these three days will undoubtedly play a crucial role in their future endeavors.

Reflections and Feedback
The post-training survey revealed high levels of satisfaction among participants. Many highlighted the content, group activities, and interaction with facilitators as the most beneficial aspects of the training. The feedback was overwhelmingly positive, with suggestions for more interactive activities, extended sessions, and additional topics to be covered in future trainings.

One participant remarked, “This training has given me the tools and confidence to advocate for better food systems in my community. The knowledge I’ve gained and the connections I’ve made here are invaluable.”

Looking Ahead
As we reflect on the success of the FSYLT, it’s clear that empowering youth to lead the way in transforming food systems is not just a necessity but a catalyst for sustainable change. The energy, passion, and commitment displayed by these young leaders are a testament to the potential they hold.

Moving forward, Shamba Box and GAIN Tanzania are committed to incorporating the feedback received and continuously improving the training program. We look forward to seeing the remarkable impact these young leaders will make in their communities and beyond.

Stay tuned for more stories of change and inspiration as we continue to empower youth to transform food systems for a better tomorrow.
