Shamba Box Fully Participated in the #WFP World Food Programme’s Tanzania Food Systems Innovation Workshop
The United Nations World Food Programme (WFP) recently hosted a workshop on April 20th, 2023 at the Commission for Science and Technology (COSTECH) in Tanzania. The workshop brought together key actors from the Tanzania food systems innovation ecosystem to identify challenges and opportunities in the food system and foster dialogue and collaboration among stakeholders in the sector.
The workshop was attended by representatives from various sectors, including government agencies, NGOs, private sector organizations, farmers, and researchers. The discussions focused on developing sustainable solutions that can address the challenges facing Tanzania’s food system, such as food insecurity, malnutrition, and low agricultural productivity. Shamba Box was presented by Ms. Dorothy Richard, who is a Research and Development Consultant at Shamba Box.
During the workshop, the WFP emphasized the importance of collaboration among stakeholders in the sector and highlighted the potential of innovation to drive progress in the food ecosystem. The discussions centered on the need for more investment in research and development, the importance of empowering smallholder farmers, and the role of technology in driving innovation in the sector.
One of the participants at the workshop was Shamba Box, which works to empower farmers and transform the food system in Tanzania. Shamba Box recognizes the critical role that smallholder farmers play in ensuring food security and economic growth in the country. Therefore, they offer training and support to help farmers increase their productivity, access markets, and adopt sustainable farming practices.
Shamba Box also recognizes the importance of addressing food waste and spoilage, which has a significant impact on the food system’s sustainability and resilience. Through their work, they aim to promote efficient post-harvest handling practices, develop innovative storage solutions, and support the creation of value-added products.
Moreover, climate change resilience is a crucial area of focus for Shamba Box. They believe that climate-smart agriculture practices and resilient agricultural systems are necessary to help farmers adapt to the impact of climate change. By building climate-resilient value chains, they can create a more sustainable and resilient food system that can withstand the challenges of climate change.
Lastly, Shamba Box is committed to improving the health and nutrition of Tanzanians. They believe that promoting the production and consumption of nutrient-rich foods, supporting the development of food fortification programs, and educating consumers about healthy eating habits can help improve the health and nutrition outcomes of Tanzanians.
In conclusion, the Tanzania Food Systems Innovation Workshop hosted by the WFP was a great opportunity for Shamba Box to collaborate with other stakeholders in the sector and share their vision and work towards transforming the food system in Tanzania. The discussions focused on developing sustainable solutions that can address the challenges facing Tanzania’s food system, such as food insecurity, malnutrition, and low agricultural productivity. By working together, stakeholders in the sector can create a more sustainable and resilient food system that benefits all Tanzanians.
