Shamba Box joined the WFP roundtable to uncover key challenges and opportunities in Tanzania’s food system. The WFP is committed to promoting equitable and inclusive economic growth in the United Republic of Tanzania, as stated in its 2022–2027 Country Strategic Plan, which focuses on investments in human capital, resilient livelihoods, and access to nutritious diets.

On April 20th, 2023, the WFP facilitated a collaborative effort among crucial stakeholders in Tanzania’s food systems innovation ecosystem, including government agencies, NGOs, private sector organizations, farmers, and researchers. The primary objective was to identify opportunities and challenges collectively within the country’s food systems innovation space.

Shamba Box was among the notable attendees and aims to establish a sustainable and resilient food system in Tanzania that fosters inclusive economic growth, food security, and enhanced nutrition and health outcomes. The organization’s primary objective is to transform the agricultural value chain and food systems in Tanzania by tackling sector-specific challenges and leveraging opportunities to create a sustainable and resilient food system.

The discussions’ focal point was promoting collaboration and knowledge-sharing among essential players in Tanzania’s food ecosystem. Objectives included identifying pressing challenges and opportunities within the country’s food system space, devising innovative and sustainable solutions to tackle the identified issues, and establishing a platform for continued collaboration and collective action among all workshop participants.

Through a thorough SWOT analysis of the agri-food system, the discussion identified the most pressing challenges and opportunities and emphasized the need for innovative and sustainable solutions to address them. Participants’ commitment to collaboration and knowledge-sharing bodes well for the development of a more resilient, inclusive, and sustainable food system in Tanzania. The roundtable discussion serves as a significant step towards achieving this objective.
