Tanzania is a country with a long coastline and a thriving seafood industry. However, the unsustainable practices of overfishing, destructive fishing methods, and weak regulatory policies have threatened the marine biodiversity of the region. To address these issues, Shamba Box has launched the SustainSea Tanzania project, which aims to promote sustainable seafood consumption practices and preserve marine biodiversity in Dar es Salaam and the coastal region of Tanzania.

The objective of the SustainSea Tanzania project is to build partnerships with local fishermen and seafood producers, educate the community on the importance of sustainable seafood consumption, and promote the use of locally caught seafood. The project will also support the development of sustainable seafood practices and policies by collaborating with local and national government agencies.

To achieve these goals, Shamba Box will conduct a needs assessment to determine the current state of the local seafood industry in Dar es Salaam and the coastal region, identify challenges and opportunities, and develop strategies to promote sustainable seafood practices. Shamba Box will also build partnerships with local fishermen and seafood producers to promote sustainable seafood practices and increase the availability of locally caught seafood in the market.

In addition, Shamba Box will conduct community education programs to raise awareness about the importance of sustainable seafood consumption and the benefits of supporting local seafood producers. The organization will also collaborate with local and national government agencies to develop policies and regulations that support sustainable seafood practices and the growth of the local seafood industry.

To promote transparency and increase consumer awareness, Shamba Box will work with local chefs, restaurants, and hotels to develop a certification or labeling system for sustainable seafood products.

The success of the SustainSea Tanzania project will be evaluated based on its impact on the local community in terms of promoting sustainable seafood practices, increasing the availability of locally caught seafood, and preserving marine biodiversity.

Project Implementor: Shamba Box is a registered and licensed consultancy that operates as a non-profit organization and is passionate about helping farmers, agripreneurs, and other stakeholders succeed in Tanzania’s thriving food system and agriculture sector. The organization’s primary focus is on transforming food systems and the agricultural value chain in Tanzania by addressing various challenges in the sector while leveraging opportunities to create a sustainable and resilient food system.

In conclusion, the SustainSea Tanzania project is a crucial step towards promoting sustainable seafood consumption practices and preserving marine biodiversity in Tanzania. Shamba Box’s efforts in building partnerships, educating the community, developing policies and regulations, and promoting transparency and consumer awareness will undoubtedly have a positive impact on the local seafood industry and the environment.
